Clinical evaluation emphasizes the concept that anatomy begets semiology, i.e., signs and symptoms. “Simple” abscesses are low-lying and confined to a single infralevator space. The anal glands are in the wall of the anal canal. Humans have between four to eight anal glands. They secrete into the anal canal via anal ducts which open into the anal crypts along the level of the dentate line.
